Geoff Davidson’s The God Stone

November 1 @ 7:30 pm

This story of the famous David, who slew the giant Goliath with a single stone from his slingshot, rings of human bravery and triumph, resonates as a tragedy of overweening hubris, and hymns a catharsis that leads to redemption in music and song. Conveyed as a concert musical, with accompanying images to carry the narrative, it features seven soloists and the choral voices of the Glenkens Singers.

The score, by the Glenkens’ own Geoff Davidson who conducts, is written in today’s musical theatre idiom, while the choir functions as a Greek chorus, encompassing conscience, warning, acolyte praise, disparagement, mourning, and ultimately, resolution.

This musical, written contemporaneously with the desperate events in Palestine, functions both as a story on its own terms, as conveyed through the ages in Biblical and Hebraic texts, and as a metaphor for our time.

Featuring the solo voices of Davy Brown as the prophet Samuel, Nia Howe as Bathsheba, Steve Jones as adult David, Nicola Junor as the prophetess Neviah, Robert Lind as King Saul, Mariella Petrucci as the boy David, and Neil Webster as Uriah, the action is interspersed with modern paraphrases of several of David’s Psalms.
