TASDAG – Turner: Painter turned Architect

J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is renowned for his art but perhaps is less known for his love of architecture.

This profound interest is evident in some of his most beautiful paintings.In his thirties and by now a wealthy man, Turner fulfilled a dream he had been nurturing: that of designing and building his own small villa near the River Thames in Twickenham.

He intended it to be a rural retreat from his hectic London life.In a major conservation project the house has been rescued from decades of decay. The lecture recounts how some unexpected findings throw a fascinating light on Turner’s intentions regarding his unique architectural gem.Mary Rose Rivett-Carnac:

Gained an MA (Distinction) in Victorian Art and Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London. In 2007 started working part-time for the Public Catalogue Foundation, now called Art UK (www.artuk.org).

Accredited lecturer for The Arts Society since 2014 and have given lectures all over the UK and in Europe.

In 2020 presented eight lectures in New Zealand via Zoom webinar.
